Clare Frederick

Clare Frederick is a USPTO-registered patent lawyer with a background in sustainability and environmental design. Clare concentrates her practice on patent prosecution, counseling, and opinion work in a wide range of technological areas.

Clare provides IP counseling and portfolio management services including global management of domestic and foreign patent portfolios as well as performing freedom to operate, patentability, and infringement analyses. She has experience drafting, prosecuting, and analyzing patent applications as well as drafting licenses and non-disclosure agreements, appeals before the USPTO Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and providing litigation support.

Clare's patent practice services companies ranging in size from entrepreneurs and startups to multi-national corporations. She works with clients to develop strategies to protect their IP as their business and technology expand and evolve. Her experience includes a wide array of technologies, including energy-related technologies, wireless communication, software, manufacturing, medical devices, and consumer products ranging from food and beverage products to electronics. With engineering experience in water resources, solid waste management, and water treatment plant design, Clare has developed a strong proficiency in environmentally-related technologies, including natural gas processing and carbon capture systems, hydrogen production technologies, and power management systems.

Clare worked as a project engineer at an international environmental engineering firm with a focus on water resources, drinking water treatment plant design, and solid waste design. As an engineer, she prepared design drawings and specifications for drinking water treatment plant improvements, including an orthophosphate feed system to decrease scaling in distribution piping and the installation of innovative low-flow filtration membrane systems to increase efficiency of bacterial removal. Her experience includes designing landfills, reviewing proposed corrective action work plans and providing oversight for court-ordered landfill closure activities on behalf of the Illinois Office of the Attorney General, and representing the Illinois EPA during corrective action at a hazardous waste Superfund site. Prior to joining the firm, Clare was as an associate at an intellectual property boutique where she worked with a wide variety of clients.
