Balamurugan Selvarajan has practiced for 19 years in criminal and general litigation. His area of focus is criminal litigation.

Apart from handling complex white collar criminal cases including offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act, Securities & Futures Act, and Computer Misuse and Cybersecurity Act, Mr. Selvarajan handles a gamut of criminal law cases including capital cases (serious drug offences), cases involving hurt (culpable homicide, voluntarily causing hurt, and hurt by rash or negligent acts) and heinous sexual offences.

He has rendered advice and opinion on compliance with anti-bribery and corruption legislation to international law firms and rendered assistance to Singaporean and international clients and consular offices and embassies in Singapore with regulations ranging from major crimes to commercial offences (e.g. under the Prevention of Corruption Act, Securities & Futures Act and Computer Misuse Act).

Mr. Selvarajan has also acted as a private prosecutor in court cases involving government agencies such as Building Control Authority (BCA), Council of Education, Council for Estate Agencies, and Central Provident Fund Board.

Professional/Civic Activities

Mr. Selvarajan is actively involved in pro bono work and volunteers at the Meet the People’s Session at Marsiling constituency and is the vice chairman for Fuchun Community Club.
He is a state assigned lawyer for capital cases in the Supreme Court. He is also a volunteer lawyer with the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme, a nonprofit initiative by the Law Society of Singapore to provide legal assistance to needy defendants in criminal cases. For his efforts, Mr. Selvarajan was awarded the Gold Award in 2010.

Prosecution Work
  • Appeared as lead counsel for Building Control Authority (BCA) in court in the prosecutions regarding compliance issues.
  • Appeared as lead counsel for the Committee for Private Education (CPE) in court in the prosecution against a private school principal, which resulted in it being a landmark decision (convicted and sentenced to imprisonment) on the issue of compliance.
  • Appeared as a lead counsel for the Council for Estate Agencies (CEA) in court in prosecution of errant estate agents which resulted in convictions.
Criminal & Regulatory Matters
  • Acted for a chartered accountant against the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore on issue involving tax evasion.
  • Acted for a chartered accountant against the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority, Singapore on issues involving improper accounting records.
  • Acted for a consultant in a corruption case involving abetting the making of false entries in a government linked company’s petty cash vouchers generating illicit payments.
  • Acted in a case involving Proposed Deprivation of Singapore Citizenship — a Mali-born naturalised Singapore citizen who was served with a Notice of Proposed Deprivation of his Singapore Citizenship after he became involved in a global match-fixing, syndicate, and criminal activities.
  • Assisted Senior Counsel N Sreenivasan in a case involving criminal breach of trust and falsification of accounts in a mega church in Singapore.
  • Assisting Senior Counsel N Sreenivasan in a case in a case of alleged market manipulation case involving three main board listed counters which had, at peak, market capitalization in excess of S$8 billion. The matter has been fixed for 120 days trial.
