On 23 June 2016, the British people held a referendum vote to withdraw from the 28-member European Union (EU). The British exit, or Brexit, from the EU continues to have significant consequences for businesses throughout the world that have dealings with the UK and Europe.

On 29 March 2017 the UK invoked Article 50 triggering the 2-year countdown to Brexit. Key dates in the exit process include:

  • 12 July 2018: The UK government publishes its White Paper setting out its proposed plan for the UK’s future relations with the EU.
  • 18 October 2018: European Council Meeting
  • 13-14 December 2018: European Council Meeting
  • 29 March 2019: The official date when the UK is set to leave the EU
