Mr. Houghton is a Senior Associate in the Restructuring & Insolvency group. He acts for leading national and international lending institutions, advisory firms and corporate clients in relation to insolvency and external administration matters, complex commercial litigation, recovery and enforcement matters, and restructuring/turnaround situations.

Mr. Houghton also has experience working as in-house legal counsel following two secondments with a leading Australian lending institution.

Professional Background

Prior to joining K&L Gates, Mr. Houghton had experience working in the Litigation & Dispute Resolution and Real Estate practices at a national Australian law firm.

  • Acting for liquidators appointed by ASIC to administer the winding up of numerous unregistered managed investment schemes, including advising on various transactions and proposed courses of action, preparing court applications for judicial directions and approval of remuneration.
  • Advised and acted for the lender and receivers in the high-profile external administration of an Australian stock-broking firm.
  • Acting for lenders and receivers in the external administration of an airline.
  • Acting for court-appointed receivers in the relation to the breakdown of a commercial partnership and sale of partnership assets, including providing advice in relation to the sale of a multi-million dollar shopping centre.
  • Acting for lenders in various mediations and settlement conferences, including mediations pursuant to the Farm Debt Mediation Act 1994.
  • Advising a leading investment bank in relation to the multi-million dollar restructure and merger of three entities and the associated reorganisation of security.
