Dominic Lau is an associate in the Hong Kong office of K&L Gates. He has practised in Hong Kong since 2009, focusing on litigation before the Hong Kong courts, international arbitration and mediation.

His practice covers a broad range of areas, including land and commercial disputes, land and building management disputes, debt recovery, insurance coverage and defence against third party claims, construction disputes, regulatory defence and white collar crime.

Prior to joining K&L Gates, Mr. Lau was at a large local Hong Kong law firm practising commercial litigation. Mr. Lau completed his training with a reputable local law firm with a focus on contentious IP matters. He gradually expanded his scope of practice and gained experience in civil and commercial litigations, particularly land-related matters, professional disciplinary matters and judicial review.
  • Represented an institutional investor against a private bank for mis-selling and delayed execution of structured financial products.
  • Represented the returning officer of a major stock brokerage to appeal against the disciplinary decision of the SFC regarding the management of the brokerage.
  • Represented a major property developer to monitor and advise on a PRC litigation to claim the ownership of a development in Sanya from PRC co-developer.
  • Represented the former owner of Penny’s Bay to claim compensation against the Hong Kong Government regarding a reclamation notice.
  • Represented a Hong Kong manufacturer to defend against an arbitration claim in NYC regarding allegations of short-shipment or conversion of goods.
  • Represented the Law Society of Hong Kong to oppose a judicial review of its disciplinary decision.
  • Represented a list Dutch company to claim compensation from its Taiwanese supplier for delivery of defective products.
  • Represented an Incorporated Owners to claim against a building consultancy firm and building contractor for defective major renovation works. Assisting in investigation of bid-rigging activities and developing tactics against such activities.
  • Represented major property developers and property investors on a regular basis to handle tenancy disputes regarding commercial premises.
  • Represented banks to recover secured and unsecured indebtedness.
  • Represented major local insurers to defend against third party claims against insured persons, and advised insurers on policy coverage and their rights against insured persons.
  • Represented various Incorporated Owners in claims injunctive reliefs against individual owners and monetary claims for sum payable under the DMC.
    • Defending individuals against charges of violent crimes and bribery both by private engagement and on the instructions from the Director of Legal Aid.
