Dominic Lau is an associate in the Hong Kong office of K&L Gates. He has practised in Hong Kong since 2009, focusing on litigation before the Hong Kong courts, international arbitration and mediation.

His practice covers a broad range of areas of disputes, including corporate and commercial, land, insurance and construction. He also advises on regulatory defence and white-collar crime.

Prior to joining K&L Gates, Mr. Lau was at a large local Hong Kong law firm practising commercial litigation. Mr. Lau completed his training with a reputable local law firm with a focus on contentious IP matters. He gradually expanded his scope of practice and gained experience in all levels of courts and arbitrations seated in different jurisdictions.
  • Represented an institutional investor in an action against a private bank for misselling and delayed execution of structured financial products.
  • Represented the responsible officer of a major stock brokerage to appeal against the disciplinary decision of the SFC regarding the management of the brokerage.
  • Represented a major property developer to manage an action in a PRC court against its JV partner regarding the ownership of a development.
  • Represented the owner of a parcel of land abutting the seashore to claim compensation against the Hong Kong Government regarding a reclamation notice.
  • Represented a Hong Kong manufacturer to defend against a claim in an arbitration seated in New York regarding allegations of short-shipment or conversion of goods.
  • Represented the Law Society of Hong Kong to oppose a judicial review of its disciplinary decision.
  • Represented a Dutch marketing conglomerate to claim compensation against a Taiwanese supplier of premium items for the delivery of defective products to campaign sites in the Czech Republic and the Republic of Slovenia.
  • Represented an Owners Corporation to claim compensation against the main contractor of a substantial renovation work of the housing complex for incomplete work and poor workmanship. Assisting in the investigation of bid-rigging activities and developing tactics against such activities.
  • Represented major property developers and property investors regularly in tenancy disputes.
  • Represented banks to recover secured and unsecured debts.
  • Represented insurers and insured persons to defend against tortuous and statutory claims; advised insurers on policy coverage and their rights against insured persons.
  • Represented Owners Corporations in actions for the enforcement of DMCs and the BMO.
  • Defending individuals by private engagement and on the instructions from the Director of Legal Aid against charges of violent and white-collar crimes.
