K&L Gates Boosts International Arbitration Practice with Hire of New York Partner Pair

31 October 2016
New York - The New York office of global law firm K&L Gates LLP welcomes Martin F. Gusy and Matthew J. Weldon as partners in the international arbitration practice. They join from Cozen O’Connor, where Gusy was chair of the international arbitration practice group.

With more than a decade of international dispute resolution, litigation, and corporate experience, Gusy concentrates his practice on international arbitration and complex cross-border litigation, counseling clients in such varied sectors as technology, energy, oil and gas, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, insurance, intellectual property, construction, and mining. He represents industry-leading clients in high-stakes, cross-border commercial disputes as well as in multi-million dollar arbitrations against sovereign states. Additionally, Gusy advises European businesses entering and operating within the United States on a wide range of corporate matters, including corporate governance, contracts, mergers and acquisitions, and joint venture formations.

A native of Germany, Gusy is an active member of the International Arbitration Institute, German Arbitration Institution, and German-American Lawyers’ Association, among others, and has served as an arbitrator and counsel in European and U.S.-based arbitrations, including those under the international arbitration rules of the American Arbitration Association/International Centre for Dispute Resolution (AAA/ICDR), International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), and United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).

Weldon also focuses his practice on international dispute resolution, including global investment and commercial arbitration and litigation. An advisory board member of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration and editor of the World Arbitration and Mediation Review, Weldon has represented clients in arbitration proceedings governed by the rules of the ICC, AAA, ICDR, SIAC, ICSID, and UNCITRAL, as well as complex cross-border disputes in state and federal courts.

“Martin and Matthew’s arrival bolsters both our U.S. and global commercial arbitration capabilities,” said John Bicks, administrative partner of K&L Gates’ New York office. “They have strong ties to Europe and a successful track record of helping European and North American clients resolve commercial disputes around the world.”

“Matt and I are thrilled to join K&L Gates, where we can continue to build out the firm’s international arbitration practice in the United States and capitalize on the international platform offered to clients,” stated Gusy.

K&L Gates’ international arbitration practice comprises more than 100 lawyers in key arbitration venues around the world, including Beijing, Dubai, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, London, Milan, New York, Paris, São Paulo, Singapore, Shanghai, and Washington, D.C.
