Kevin T. McCormick

Kevin McCormick is admitted to practice in Illinois, Wisconsin and by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He is not currently admitted in Tennessee.

Kevin McCormick is a USPTO-registered partner and a member of the IP Procurement and Portfolio Management practice group.

Kevin primarily focuses his practice on patent portfolio management and related counseling, opinion work, and due diligence. He has domestic and foreign patent prosecution experience involving a variety of technology sectors, including aerospace devices, advanced materials, apparel and active wear, automotive accessories, computer memory devices, computer networking and virtualization, drilling systems, equine and livestock equipment, GPS technology, infusion pumps, medical diagnostic and monitoring devices, smart-TVs, e-commerce applications, business methods, and a variety of miscellaneous mechanical and electromechanical devices.

Kevin has experience in large volume freedom to operate and landscape study work, particularly focused on new product development. This includes both technical and legal IP portfolio investigation and analysis, with specific focus on business impact and risk mitigation. He has performed patentability, invalidity, and infringement analysis over a wide range of technologies. Likewise, Kevin has evaluated commercial products, offerings, and related patent portfolios for M&A transactions, IP acquisition opportunities, licensing, and litigation strategy.

Kevin also has experience in U.S. Patent Office litigation through inter partes review proceedings spanning all stages of the post-grant timeline, from petition preparation to trial.

Prior to his career in law, Kevin worked for GE Healthcare, where he gained valuable experience in both design and manufacturing engineering with roles related to computed tomography (CT), X-ray, and patient bedside monitoring technologies. He also worked as an associate for an international trade compliance firm, assisting clients with compliance management, commodity classification, and export licensing requirements.

During law school, Kevin was a research assistant for Professor Kali N. Murray. In this role, he helped prepare an amicus brief to the Supreme Court of the United States regarding Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics, Inc. He was also a student leader for the academic success program at his law school. Kevin gained patent prosecution experience at a Milwaukee-based law firm, prior to joining K&L Gates as a summer associate in 2013.

Kevin’s pro bono experience includes representing clients in guardianship and family court proceedings. He has also represented pro bono clients in various intellectual property matters.
