Hal Gibson is a biotech-focused patent attorney who has taken clients from start-up to acquisition. He provides his unique experience to patent prosecution, transactional matters including due diligence, freedom to operate analysis, portfolio management, and developing foreign filing strategies related to pharmaceuticals, medical devices, analytical equipment, consumer goods, and bioprocess systems. He also has extensive experience in design patents and trademarks. Mr. Gibson serves clients of all sizes from sole inventors to multi-national corporations.

Mr. Gibson holds a BS degree in Cellular Biology (Chemistry minor) from California State University San Marcos. During his time at CSUSM, Mr. Gibson performed extensive research into “shock proteins” under the direction of Dr. Jose Mendoza as well as cloning RuBisCO genes from a number of sources.

Mr. Gibson is a published author in the field of Patent Law, and a decorated U.S. Marine veteran with several deployments to Asia and the Mideast.

Mr. Gibson is a member of the Orange County Intellectual Property Law Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Third Marine Division Association, and the Newport Harbor American Legion.

Professional Background

Prior to joining K&L Gates, Mr. Gibson served as patent attorney at a multi-national health care company in Irvine, CA. Mr. Gibson’s industry experience includes work at San Diego biotech companies Stratagene, Chiron, and Ontogen.
