Kamil Gerard Ahmed is a partner in the firm’s banking and finance practice in Singapore and Tokyo. He is one of a very few lawyers who is not only qualified to practice in New York and England & Wales, but also has extensive on-the-ground experience advising on the laws of both jurisdictions.

Mr. Ahmed has considerable experience advising on the financing, leasing and trading of aircraft and equipment assets. He has worked on a variety of financial products, including Japanese operating leases, Japanese operating leases with call options, operating leases, finance/capital leases, sales and leasebacks, owner trusts, and portfolio sales, acquisitions and financings. He has also advised on a U.S. Chapter 11 airline restructuring as the airline’s bankruptcy and restructuring counsel. Beyond asset finance and leasing, he also has experience across a range of other related product areas. He regularly advises on secured and unsecured financings, syndicated lending, leveraged finance, project finance, as well as on U.S. capital markets (equity and debt).

Mr. Ahmed has been recognized for his work by a number of legal directories, including as a “Leading Lawyer” by the International Who’s Who of Aviation Lawyers for “Aviation Finance” and as a “Rising Star” by Euromoney Legal Media Group’s Rising Stars for “Banking and Finance”, “Aviation” and “Capital Markets”. He is also recognised as a “Rising Star” in aviation by Expert Guides, 2019 edition. Having worked on a number of headline transactions, his work has also been recognized in the financial press, including, most recently:

  • Aircraft Lessor JOLCO Deal of the Year (2018) Global Transport Finance (GTF) Award – advising a major Japanese leasing company on a JOLCO financing with ICBC Aviation Leasing Company Limited (ICBC Aviation) in respect of two new Airbus A321neo aircraft leased to Vietnam Airlines. This was ICBC Aviation’s first JOLCO financing involving a Vietnamese airline;
  • JOLCO Deal of the Year, Europe (2018) GTF Award – advising a major Japanese leasing company on a JOLCO financing with Scandinavian Airlines System Denmark - Norway - Sweden in respect of four Airbus A320neo aircraft; and
  • JOLCO Deal of the Year, Australia (2018) GTF Award & AirFinance Journal Tax Lease Deal of the Year 2018 – advising a major Japanese leasing company on a JOLCO financing with Virgin Australia Airlines Pty Limited (Virgin Australia) in respect of six vintage Boeing 737-800 aircraft. This was the first time Virgin Australia participated in a JOLCO financing transaction.

Mr. Ahmed has been based in Asia since 2014. Immediately prior to joining the Firm, he worked for a Magic Circle firm in Asia for four years and, before that, worked for leading Wall Street firms in New York City for close to seven years. He also previously completed an office rotation in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and was on a Middle East desk for a number of years out of New York City. Mr. Ahmed started his legal career in Canada with one of Canada’s leading firms in its Montreal and Toronto offices.

Mr. Ahmed graduated from the Master of Laws program at Columbia Law School as a James Kent Scholar, the law school’s highest award for outstanding academic achievement, as well as with a certificate with honors from the Parker School of Foreign and Comparative Law. Prior to that, he graduated from the JD/MBA program at the University of Toronto on the Dean’s List. He has authored a number of scholarly articles, some of which are widely cited in academic journals, and is the co-editor of a widely-cited Oxford University Press treatise entitled The Evolving International Investment Regime: Expectations, Realities, Options.
