Ms. Ang’s practice focuses on arbitration particularly in the hospitality sector, litigation in the corporate and commercial space as well as restructuring & insolvency matters. She has been involved in shareholders’ disputes, employment disputes and property-related disputes such as collective sales and MCST matters.

In addition contentious work, Ms. Ang also advises on hotel management agreements both prior to execution of the suite of agreements and daily operational issues during the course of the management agreement.

Arbitration
  • Assisted Senior Counsel in successfully representing a client in their claim against the Respondent on a breach of a joint venture agreement between the 2 parties which would entitle the client to buy out the Respondent’s shares in the joint venture company. The dispute involved an amount in excess of US$200m.
  • Two (2) International Arbitrations covering breaches of hotel management contracts wherein she acted on behalf of the hotel managers on termination by the hotel owners. Both arbitrations took place under ICC Rules of Arbitration.
  • Acting for a Hotel Management company (ICC Rules) (2014) - Assisted Senior Counsel in a successful claim by a Hotel Management company against a Hotel Owner for wrongful termination of the hotel management agreement. Hotel was located in Phuket, Thailand. Had to work with Thai counsel as agreements were subject to Thai law.\
  • Acting for a Hotel Management company (SIAC Rules) (2015) - Assisted Senior Counsel in the defence of a Hotel Management company a Hotel Owner for breach of the Hotel management agreements between the parties. Hotel was located in Singapore. The matter was settled after close of pleadings.
  • Acting for a Hotel Management company (SIAC Rules) (2015) - Assisting Senior Counsel in a claim by a Hotel Management company against a Hotel Owner for wrongful termination of the hotel management agreement. Hotel was located in Phuket, Thailand. Working with Thai counsel as agreements were subject to Thai law..
  • Acting for a sub-contractor for piping works in claim by 1st Tier Sub-Contractor (SIAC Rules) (2011) - Project involving a piping works in a water reclamation plant. Assisting Senior Counsel in a claim by Sub-Contractor against clients who was the contractor for the piping works. Issues of whether contract was a lump sum or measurements contracts and issues of quantification and liability for variation works.

Contractual and Tortious Matters
  • Sim Yong Kim v Evenstar Investments Pte Ltd [2006] 3 SLR(R) 827 - assisted in representing a minority shareholder in the winding up of the company on just and equitable grounds.
  • Suit No. 961/2009/K – succeeded in defending a claim by a contractor of NParks.
  • Equinox Offshore Accommodation Ltd v Richshore Marine Supplies Pte Ltd [2010] SGHC 122 - where she acted successfully in resisting an application for pre-arbitral discovery.
  • Sembcorp Marine Ltd v PPL Holdings Pte Ltd and another [2012] 3SLR 801 – where she assisted as Instructing Counsel for the Defendant which successfully argued, inter alia, against the reliance on an implied term in a joint venture agreement between the Plaintiff and Defendant which would have allowed the Plaintiff to buy over the shares of the Defendant in the joint venture company.
  • Various High Court cases involving director and shareholder disputes.

Land Law Disputes
  • Successfully representing either collective sale committees or objectors in 5 separate collective sales.

Quasi-judicial matters and administrative actions
  • Mir Hassan bin Abdul Rahman and another v Attorney-General [2009] 1 SLR(R) 134; [2008] SGHC 147 assisted in the representation of the Sales Committee of the Tampines Court, a privatized HUDC Estate, and successfully applied for a Judicial Review of the decision of the Strata Titles Board on the issue as to whether the Board had exercised its discretion illegally and/or irrationally in the Wednesbury sense.

Insolvency
  • Advising a creditor of Technics Offshore Engineering Pte Ltd and Technics Oil & Gas Limited, both under Judicial Management, wherein the total debt due to the client is approximately S$250m.
  • Advising the CPF Board as creditor in applications for Schemes of Arrangement by Stratech Systems Limited and The Stratech Group Limited.
