Daryl Cheong is an associate at the firm’s Singapore office. He is a member of the litigation and dispute resolution practice group. His practice is in general litigation, including insurance-related matters.

Professional Background

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Cheong began his practice at a boutique firm in Singapore with a wide range of work such as trusts, construction, bankruptcy, contract, defamation, and advisory work for strata title matters.

In the past three years, his focus has been on insurance disputes. He has been involved in prosecuting and defending numerous injury, damage, and recovery claims with sizeable quantums. He has acted for some of the major local and international insurance companies, as well as for claimants.

  • Acted in a protracted family dispute over a S$2 million valued property.
  • Acted for the MCST of a large commercial building in a claim against the developer and main contractor for building defects.
  • Acted for the successful defence in a reported and publicized suit involving the sale and purchase of a Ferrari vehicle.
  • Acted for the successful appellant, a major insurance company in NTUC Foodfare Co-operative Ltd v SIA Engineering Co Ltd and another [2018] 2 SLR 588 (Court of Appeal), in a recovery claim for economic losses caused by damage caused to the structure of a section of Terminal 2 at the Singapore Changi Airport. The subsequent related decision, in [2018] 4 SLR 762, is also a current authority for Offers to Settle made under the Rules of Court.
  • Acted for a major international insurance company in a successful recovery claim against a policyholder of a luxury vehicle. The matter involved an analysis of the insurer’s obligation to pay third-party victims pursuant to the Motor Insurance Bureau Agreements.
  • Acted in numerous injury, damage, public liability, industrial, and recovery claims, including conducting trials and hearings. Settlements were also negotiated where they were in the client’s interests.
