John Makris

Mr. Makris is a workplace health and safety and environmental law practitioner. His particular focus is advising and representing large companies and their management in industrial, workplace health and safety and environmental law. He represents a number of large corporations in a range of industries including transport, manufacturing, construction, agriculture, energy, retail and health care.

He provides advice on workplace safety and environmental legislative compliance, assisting in the investigation of workplace incidents and defending or mitigating criminal prosecutions commenced by safety and environmental regulators for breaches of legislation.

He devotes a significant amount of time to proactively addressing health and safety and environmental compliance, including educating and training his clients on a range of safety, environmental and workers compensation topics, presenting regular education seminars to his clients and industry. He regularly conducts workplace safety and environmental compliance training to ensure that his clients and their responsible individuals are compliant with legislation.

Mr. Makris is actively involved in a number of industry specific groups and regularly provides advice and representation to industry bodies.

He has extensive experience in the areas of workplace safety and environmental compliance and incident response, Coronial Inquests and workers compensation claim and premium issues.

  • Acted in cases involving the prosecution of a major suppliers of plant and equipment to agricultural and construction markets.
  • Acted for large construction companies to provide proactive advice in relation to compliance with legislation, in addition to representing the companies in investigations by regulators and appearing in both Coronial and criminal prosecution proceedings.
  • Negotiating an enforceable undertaking for a large construction company for alleged pollution breaches
  • Negotiating an enforceable undertaking for a large health care organisation for an alleged safety breach arising from a serious incident
  • Assisting a large retail chain after a serious incident and making representation to the regulator resulting in the regulator’s decision not to commence prosecutions against the company and individuals.
  • Assisted in advising organisations within the health care industry to respond to workplace incidents.
  • Developing and facilitating a customised compliance training program for executive directors, managers and supervisors of a major utility supplier to enable compliance with requirements.
  • Advising and making representations on behalf of a number of large companies who were audited for workers compensation premium liabilities resulting in a repayment by the insurer of additional premiums previously paid.
