Mr. Elgar is a partner in the London office’s Corporate practice group. He advises on a wide range of corporate transactions including acquisitions and disposals, joint ventures, media rights and licensing deals, takeovers, flotations, rights issues, other fund raisings and capital reorganizations, across a number of sectors, including financial services and banking, sports, leisure and betting & gaming.

Professional Background

John qualified as a lawyer in 1982.  He joined the firm in 1985.

  • Acting for Arena Leisure on its £200m+ sale to Aldersgate Investments Limited
  • Advising the International Cricket Council on the sale by tender of its global media rights for ICC events
  • Acting for Arena Leisure on a 5-year sale of media rights to Satellite Information Services for a total fee in excess of £100m
  • Advising the Pakistan Cricket Board on its sale by tender of global audio-visual rights to Pakistan cricket matches for 2009-2013
  • Advising the West Indies Cricket Board on its global media rights sales for the 2009-2012 and 2013-2019 cycles, establishment of the Caribbean Premier League, commercial rights exploitation programme, arrangements with players, players’ association and territorial boards and hosting of 2010 ICC World Twenty20
  • Advising Tipp 24 SE on various corporate matters, including its 2014 relocation to the UK, the first time such a transaction has been effected by an SE with an listing on a European stock exchange
  • Advising Puma on its shirt sponsorship deal with Arsenal Football Club
  • Advising Habib Allied International Bank on its purchase of Habibsons Bank
  • Acting for Gottex Fund Management on its acquisition of Frontier Investment Management

  • Acting for Merchant Retail Group in its £220m takeover by a bid vehicle established by A.S. Watson & Co Limited, a member of the Hutchison Whampoa group
  • Acting for Arena Leisure in the acquisition of various racecourses, including those at Lingfield Park, Folkestone, Wolverhampton, Southwell and Windsor, and in its arrangements with Doncaster Council for the acquisition of control of Doncaster Racecourse, home of the St Leger
  • Acting for Sportech PLC in its £161.8m acquisition of the Littlewoods Leisure division of The Littlewoods Organisation, comprising Littlewoods Pools, Bet 247, Bet Direct and Littlewoods Lotteries, and the subsequent acquisition of Vernons
  • Acting for Leisure Parcs Limited in its £74m acquisition of the Blackpool Tower and other leisure assets comprised in the resorts division of First Leisure Corporation, and on the sale of the Blackpool Tower and other assets to Blackpool Borough Council in 2010
  • Acting for Genesis Holdings International Limited in the sale of its asset management business (with US$7.5 billion under management) to a partnership formed by members of Genesis management and Affiliated Managers Group Inc.
