Claire Tan is a member of the arbitration and dispute resolution practice group. Her legal practice focuses on corporate and commercial disputes. She has also been involved in major international arbitrations as well as domestic arbitrations.

Commercial and Civil Litigation
  • Successfully represented the plaintiff involving a claim against the defendant for breach of a settlement agreement. The plaintiff successfully obtained winding up orders against several family-owned companies. The defendant objected to the winding up orders. The initial dispute culminated in the settlement agreement and which became the subject matter of the latest proceedings: Lin Choo Mee v Lim Sze Eng [2018] SGHC 7, Lin Choo Mee v. Tat Leong Development (Pte) Ltd and Others and Other matters [2015] SGHC 99
  • Successfully represented the defendant in a claim for more than US$1.6 million. The plaintiffs sued for a breach of oral agreement; alternatively, misrepresentations, alternatively, breach of trust and were unsuccessful in all their claims: Tan Swee Wan and Kelvin Low v. Johnny Lian Tian Yong [2018] SGHC 169
  • Successfully represented the Respondent in an appeal against the Appellant’s application to set aside an arbitral award: Prometheus Marine Pte Ltd v King, Ann Rita and another appeal [2017] SGCA 61
  • Represented several Plaintiffs in the applications for amongst other things, a Springboard Injunction and a Mareva Injunction: Goh Seng Heng v RSP Investments and others and another matter [2017] 3 SLR 657


  • Successfully represented clients in their claim on a breach of a joint venture agreement between the two parties which would entitle clients to buy out the other party’s shares in the joint venture company. The subject matter of the dispute is more than US$500 million and involved Myanmar and Singapore entities.
  • Represented a hotel operator of a chain of hotels worldwide against a claim brought by the hotel owner. The hotel owner had sought to terminate the hotel management agreement and client had a counterclaim for outstanding fees and sums dues under the said agreement. The claim was eventually settled on terms favourable to the hotel operator.
  • Acted for the sole 100% shareholder of ordinary shares in a Singapore incorporated holding company against the preference shareholder. The dispute arose following the death of the founder of the company and from his alleged breaches of an investment agreement that was entered into between, amongst others, the founder and the preference shareholder. The operations of the companies are largely based in Malaysia.
  • Conducted investigations on behalf of the Audit Committee of a Singapore-listed company into a poison pen letter that was sent to SGX.
  • Advised and successfully represented a childcare centre in a statutory appeal to the Minister.
  • Advised a telecommunications company in its statutory appeal to the Minister.
