In the 63 years since its creation, the Pittsburgh office has developed into one of the largest law offices in Pennsylvania and has been named as the top corporate law firm in Pittsburgh for four of the last six years by Corporate Board Member magazine.  Approximately half of the lawyers practice in the litigation area, while a roughly equal number practice in the corporate field, including the related specialties.

The office’s corporate and business practice embraces antitrust, banking, bankruptcy/restructurings, corporate counseling, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, environmental, employee benefits, executive compensation, health care, technology, intellectual property, labor and employment, privacy and HIPAA, nonprofit organizations, real estate, finance (including structured equity, debt and hybrid investment vehicles), securities, tax, and trusts and estates.    Approximately 100 lawyers devote a significant portion of their time to facilitating the structuring, financing, and successful completion of acquisitions, divestitures, and other transactions for clients ranging from emerging high-technology enterprises to Fortune 500 manufacturers.  We serve as securities counsel to many public companies and we have been counsel to the divesting company in numerous major public spin-off transactions.  The Pittsburgh corporate group recently completed a $414 million IPO transaction, and acts as Preferred Counsel for Mergers & Acquisitions for United Technologies Corporation, a Fortune 100 company based in Hartford, Connecticut.  The Pittsburgh corporate group is also one of the most experienced and active in the nation in the use of ESOPs in conjunction with corporate transactions and represented the ESOP Trustee in the going-private transaction of the Tribune Company, the largest ESOP transaction in history.  The Pittsburgh office has extensive experience in a wide variety of private equity, venture capital, private finance, leveraged buy-out, and other restructuring and recapitalization transactions.

The Pittsburgh office has more than 125 litigation lawyers active in courts and in ADR forums in a wide variety of disciplines:   securities, insurance coverage, construction, business torts, bankruptcy, banking, intellectual property, antitrust, white collar crime, product liability, toxic tort, environmental, professional liability, class actions, and employment litigation, among other areas.  Our clients are drawn from around the nation and the world, and the venues in which they use our litigators are equally far-flung.  The Pittsburgh office is the fulcrum for a nationally recognized insurance coverage practice, which has litigated cases on behalf of policyholders in over 30 states across the nation.  The Pittsburgh office is also nationally recognized in the field of toxic tort bankruptcies, representing debtors and third-party non-debtors, including representing the debtors in the largest asbestos and silica-related pre-packaged Chapter 11 bankruptcy ever filed in the United States.

The Pittsburgh office has been at the forefront of the development of the Marcellus, Utica and Huron shales.  Our oil and gas team includes lawyers licensed to practice in the active areas of the Appalachian region, including Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and New York and are experienced in all areas of law associated with the development of the Marcellus Shale and associated infrastructure, including: Regulatory/Tax Issues; Mineral Rights/Leases; Access to Public Lands; Siting and Land Use; Permitting; Water Resource Challenges; Wastewater Treatment/Management; Surface Use Agreements; Mediation & Arbitration; Public Policy; and Litigation.
