Michael Cotton is an associate in the firm’s Pittsburgh office, where he works in the Energy, Infrastructure, and Resources practice area, with a focus in construction and commercial litigation. Mr. Cotton represents owners, contractors, and design professionals in a variety of public and private construction disputes. He has worked on large-scale international and domestic projects, including oil and gas processing facilities, manufacturing plants, railroads, water treatment plants, and environmental cleanups. Mr. Cotton’s trial experience includes defending a $1.9 million claim against a federal timber sale harvester, in which he obtained a jury verdict for defendants. Mr. Cotton also assisted a trial team that obtained a jury verdict of approximately $2 million under the Pennsylvania Contractor and Subcontractor Payment Act for unpaid construction work performed by an electrical contractor.

In addition to his construction litigation experience, Mr. Cotton also represents clients in connection with public procurement issues and has extensive experience in all phases of bid protest proceedings throughout the country.

Mr. Cotton is active in the firm’s pro bono programs where he represents clients in resentencing proceedings who were previously sentenced to life without parole as juveniles.

Mr. Cotton is licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Professional Background

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Cotton was a summer associate at the firm’s Pittsburgh office in 2014. In addition, he was a legal intern in the Environmental Enforcement Section of the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General in 2013, and a volunteer legal assistant for the Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia.
