Areas of Practice

Christian Hullmann is a partner in the firm's Berlin office. He focuses on land use and planning law as well as on environmental law. He has extensive experience advising leading German and international corporate clients on real estate developments and transactions, as well as on drafting and negotiating planning agreements relating to issues such as enabling development. In addition, Christian advises clients on renewable energy projects such as photovoltaic (PV) facilities and wind farms. He has been involved in numerous due diligence procedures, and the negotiation of environmental warranties and indemnities in corporate transactions.

Representative Experience
  • Represented Frontier Renewables GmbH in the planning and development of several large-scale PV facilities in Germany;
  • Advised Q-Cells International GmbH in matters relating to the erection of a 20 MW solar power plant in Ontario, Canada;
  • Represented a large European construction company on several development contracts with a German city in connection with the development of a new urban district;
  • Represented a UK investment fund on several development contracts with a German city;
  • Advised a listed German transportation company regarding environmental risks in its proposed acquisition of a company;
  • Advised a German residential development company on building permit proceedings in connection with a housing development in Berlin;
  • Advised a UK investor on planning law issues in relation to an acquisition of a shopping center in Magdeburg, including insuring the risk under English law;
  • Advised a Danish energy company on planning law issues resulting from a pipeline crossing a planned offshore wind farm on the German continental shelf;
  • Drafted and negotiated several town planning agreements with a German city on behalf of a UK investment fund for the development of a retail center in Germany;
  • Court representation of a subsidiary of a large European construction company concerning the failed development of a residential park in a luxury resort in the vicinity of Berlin;
  • Negotiated several indemnification claims with environmental authorities relating to industrial sites in Germany on behalf of a subsidiary of a large European construction company;
  • Advised a UK investor on planning and environmental matters in relation to the acquisition of an industrial site near Stuttgart;
  • Advised an American company on the shipment of waste into the EU; and
  • Represented a UK investment fund on the acquisition of a large German residential portfolio.

Professional Background

Christian joined K&L Gates in January 2007. From 2001 to 2006 he worked in the Berlin offices of leading international law firms.

Christian holds lectures on planning law and environmental topics, including, recently, on "Sustainability and Inner-City Developments" and "Climate Protection and Real Estate."
