Areas of Practice

Dr. Wilhelm Hartung is a partner in the firm's Berlin and Frankfurt offices and a member of its Corporate and Transactional practice group. He focuses on complex international/cross-border M&A and commercial transactions as well as internal corporate and regular investigations.

His transactional experience covers structuring, drafting and negotiating mergers and acquisitions, strategic joint ventures and alliances, and high-end commercial contracts, with an emphasis on clients in regulated industries. The aviation projects he has worked on include advising passenger and cargo airlines, airline catering and airline maintenance providers. His advice on telecoms transactions has primarily been in the mobile sector, including negotiating and drafting national and international roaming and infrastructure sharing agreements relating to both GSM and UMTS.

His corporate investigations experience includes reviews of large strategic projects, alleged accounting fraud, whistleblower allegations, corporate governance and internal controls, and compliance issues, whether as part of ongoing or expected regulatory proceedings, or in preparation for litigation/arbitration.

Representative Experience
  • Representing Continental AG in the sale of its worldwide public transport solution business
  • Representing Jettainer, the worldwide leading aircraft container management company and a Lufthansa Cargo AG (LCAG) group member, in the acquisition of the outstanding stake from LCAG's joint venture partner Trenstar Inc. Denver/Colorado
  • Representing Harlequin Enterprises Inc., a global book publisher belonging to the Canadian media company Torstar Corporation, in acquiring the outstanding 50 % stake in Cora Verlag GmbH & Co. KG from Axel Springer AG
  • Advising the German Insurance Association (GDV) on a legal assessment of Section 111 of the U.S. Medicare, Medicaid and SCHIP Extension Act 2007 (MMSEA) 
  • Advising of U.S. and European multi-national companies on drafting and implementing compliance and corporate conduct guidelines, on data protection/privacy and in connection with whistleblower schemes

Professional Background

Dr. Hartung is dual qualified in Germany and England and Wales and practices out of the Berlin, Frankfurt and London offices. He joined K&L Gates in March 2008 from a major international U.S. law firm where he had been based in London and Germany. Prior to reading law at Bonn University, he trained as a banker at Dresdner Bank AG and in 1996 worked as a junior lawyer in the legal department of Dresdner Bank, New York.
