Areas of Practice
Phil Guess is a partner in K&L Gates' Seattle office. His current practice emphasizes representing private and public entities in commercial, securities and energy disputes.
Business Litigation
Phil has a broad range of experience in business litigation, including representing companies in disputes involving alleged contractual breaches, usurpation of trade secrets, tortious interference and class action allegations. His commercial litigation clients include Washington Mutual Bank, Amazon.com, T–Mobile Corporation and Microsoft. He has litigated numerous cases in Washington and California courts as well as in a number of other jurisdictions, including New York, Oregon, Montana and Tennessee.
Securities Litigation
Phil has represented numerous companies involving securities matters, including derivative claims, assertions by minority investors, class action allegations and disputes with government regulators. In these cases, Phil has worked in a variety of capacities, including company counsel, investor counsel and shadow counsel in both state and federal courts in Washington, California and New York.
Energy Litigation
Phil has represented a variety of energy companies including PPL Montana, PPL and Northwest Pipeline in commercial and government litigation. These cases involved a significant number of issues from constitutional preemption, to alleged contractual breaches, to class action allegations. Prior to attending law school, Phil worked in the energy industry as a rate and tariff analyst for Pacific Gas & Electric Company.
Phil is licensed to practice in both Washington and California and, prior to moving to Seattle, practiced for three years in San Francisco where he focused on complex commercial litigation.

Phil has been named a "Super Lawyer" by Washington Law and Politics magazine for the last two years and was named a "Rising Star" by the same publication for the preceding two years.
