Ryan Severson is an associate in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office, where he is a member of the Public Policy and Law practice group. Mr. Severson’s practice is focused primarily on health care and federal tax policy.
Mr. Severson advises and represents clients on a wide variety of legal and regulatory health care matters, including the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, health information privacy under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Medicare payment regulations, as well as health care tax issues. As part of this practice, Mr. Severson has represented major corporations, health plans, hospital systems, professional organizations, and others.
Mr. Severson's federal tax policy practice includes a particular focus on energy taxes. Through this work, Mr. Severson has represented renewable energy trade associations, biofuel companies, venture capital groups, and others on various pieces of federal tax legislation. Mr. Severson is also closely involved in the debate over comprehensive tax reform and tax extenders, helping clients anticipate and respond to legislative and regulatory developments.
Mr. Severson works closely on issues involving the House Ways and Means Committee, Senate Finance Committee, House Energy and Commerce Committee, and Senate HELP Committee, as well as the Department of the Treasury (including the Internal Revenue Service) and the Department of Health and Human Services.
During law school, Mr. Severson was a law clerk in the Office of the Attorney General of Maryland and was a legal intern for U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski, where he focused on health care legislation. He was a summer associate at K&L Gates in 2009.
