Mr. Bekkers represents investment companies and their independent board members, on matters arising under U.S. federal securities laws, with a focus on exchange-traded funds (ETFs), mutual funds and variable products.

In particular, Mr. Bekkers regularly:

  • Organizes and registers investment companies in various fund structures.
  • Requests exemptive relief for clients from certain of the U.S. federal securities laws, including to operate ETFs and interfund lending programs.
  • Communicates with the SEC on behalf of clients.
  • Prepares materials to assist board members in their review of both routine and non-routine matters, including advisory contracts.
  • Prepares and reviews registration statements, proxy statements and other regulatory filings.
  • Guides clients through the exchange-listing process.
  • Advises clients regarding their compliance programs.
  • Handles other transactional, regulatory and compliance matters concerning investment companies and their boards.

Professional Background

Mr. Bekkers is an associate in K&L Gates' Investment Management Group and is based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. Prior to joining K&L Gates, Mr. Bekkers was a student attorney at the University of Michigan's Entrepreneurship Clinic and a summer associate in the Shanghai office of a large Chinese law firm.
