Yamilet Hurtado is a litigation associate at the firm’s Miami office where her practice focuses on employment law and commercial litigation.

In the area of employment law, Ms. Hurtado defends employers in wide range of employment disputes, including wage and hour claims, discrimination and/or retaliation lawsuits, and whistleblower actions. Additionally, Ms. Hurtado advises employers on day-to-day employment matters before adversarial disputes arise to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations. She also conducts internal investigations related to various compliance matters including allegations of discrimination, harassment, fraud, corruption, and/or corporate governance irregularities. Ms. Hurtado also drafts and prepares handbooks and related policies for employers. She also counsels and trains company personnel on ethics and code of conduct compliance, diversity, and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Ms. Hurtado also conducts employment and anti-corruption due diligence in the context of mergers and acquisitions.

In the complex litigation arena, Ms. Hurtado assists companies in resolving business disputes. Ms. Hurtado has been involved in various matters involving claims of misappropriation of trade secrets, breach of restrictive covenant agreements (such as non-disclosure and non-solicitation provisions), violations of Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, consumer fraud, slander/defamation, and other civil disputes.

Professional Background

Prior to joining K&L Gates, Ms. Hurtado was an associate at a Washington, D.C. based firm, where she represented companies and executives with regard to governmental investigations and white collar criminal matters. Ms. Hurtado also represented management in employment and workplace matters before federal and state courts as well as administrative agencies, and counseled on a wide range of employment issues. While in law school, she worked as a law clerk at the Office of Immigration Litigation of the United States Department of Justice.
