Alexander T. Katsulis

Alex Katsulis is an associate at the firm’s Chicago office where he is a member of the IP procurement and portfolio management practice group and a USPTO-registered patent attorney. Alex focuses his practice on patent prosecution, litigation and post grant proceedings, opinion work, due diligence, and landscape studies. He has experience in foreign and domestic patent related matters involving a variety of technologies, such as microelectronic devices, semiconductors, materials, software, medical devices, digital healthcare systems, mobile device technology, and manufacturing processes.

Alex has experience drafting patent applications, including provisional, non-provisional, and PCT applications, and constructing office actions responses. He has experience drafting opinions such as patentability, validity and strength, non-infringement, and freedom-to-operate opinions. He also has experience in due diligence research and analysis for portfolio acquisitions. Alex has experience with post-grant proceedings, particularly being involved in the preparation of inter partes review petitions, and has drafted motions for pending litigation. He has conducted landscape studies to identify strategic acquisition opportunities and analyzed patent portfolios to discern potentially valuable IP for litigation opportunities.

Alex served as a summer associate at the firm in 2017. Prior to that time, he gained additional patent prosecution experience as a summer associate at a Chicago-based patent firm.

During law school at Boston University, Alex competed in the USPTO International Patent Drafting Competition where he collaborated with a team to draft a patent application and present their drafting process. He also was a member of the Technology and Cyberlaw Clinic. In this role, Alex counseled MIT and Boston University students on numerous legal issues pertaining to areas such as web crawling, cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology, computer security software, open source software licensing, sensitive data storage, and trademark law.

Prior to law school, while attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Alex completed a co-op at United Technologies Aerospace Systems in their Materials Science and Engineering department. There, he conducted special process and failure analysis evaluations of aerospace components, including examining material fracture surfaces using Scanning Electron Microscopy.
