Apurv Gaurav is a USPTO-registered patent attorney at the firm's Chicago office. He is a member of the IP Procurement and Portfolio Management, Post Grant Patents, and IP Litigation practice groups. Apurv leverages his dual technical backgrounds in electrical engineering and molecular and cell biology to practice over a broad spectrum of technology areas including AI and machine learning, medical imaging and devices, software, mobile apps, digital health, wireless communications, hardware and electrical circuits, signal processing, distributed ledgers, AR/VR, vehicle telematics devices, the Internet of Things (IoT), sensors, and clean energy technology. Apurv has counseled clients ranging from Fortune 100 companies to startups by delivering legal solutions that drive to the heart of the client's business goals.
As part of his Post Grants Patent practice, Apurv works with clients to avoid or reduce the cost of litigation through use of post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeals Board. Apurv has experience preparing petitions for inter partes review, working with experts to prepare supporting declarations, drafting Petitioner replies, and presenting oral arguments in front of the Board. He also has experience developing invalidity positions for IP litigation at federal courts.
As part of his IP Procurement and Portfolio Management practice, Apurv represents clients throughout the life of an invention - from mining and identifying patentable ideas to issuance. Relying on his entrepreneurship and startup experience, Apurv combines creativity with legal problem-solving skills to help clients secure robust patents in often competitive patent landscapes. He builds and manages strategic global patent portfolios by understanding his client's long term strategic interests and monitoring competitor activities. Furthermore, Apurv has experience conducting large scale freedom to operate studies for his clients' flagship products, with an eye towards mitigating the risks of litigation or determining licensing strategies. He has also performed patentability, invalidity, and infringement analyses, and conducted due diligence reviews.
