K&L Gates Enhances Investment Management, Financial Services, Derivatives and Structured Products Practices with Washington, D.C., Partner Hire

30 April 2019

Washington, D.C. - The Washington, D.C., office of K&L Gates LLP has added Stephen M. Humenik as a partner in the investment management, hedge funds and alternative investments and derivatives and structured products practices of the global law firm’s financial services practice area. He joins K&L Gates from Covington & Burling LLP, where he led the global futures and derivatives practice.

Humenik has more than two decades of experience on cross-border regulatory, compliance, and enforcement matters involving the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), derivatives markets, and physical and financial commodities. He advises a diverse range of clients, including asset managers, hedge funds, swap dealers, financial institutions, trading platforms, commodity and corporate end-users, trade associations, and cryptocurrency and FinTech companies on the implementation of CFTC regulations, including the registration, trading, clearing, and other compliance obligations stemming from global regulatory developments.

He previously served at the CFTC as a special counsel and policy advisor to former CFTC Commissioner Scott O’Malia. Humenik was also general counsel and chief regulatory officer of interest rate swap derivatives market Eris Exchange, LLC, where he oversaw Eris’ registration as a futures exchange, as well as its legal and regulatory affairs.

“Steve will further enhance our global investment management practice with his regulatory, policy, transactional, and enforcement experience,” said Mark C. Amorosi, a partner in K&L Gates’ Washington, D.C., office and a leader of the firm’s investment management practice. “His deep understanding of derivatives platforms will be a benefit to our investment management clients across the firm. We’re thrilled to welcome him to the team, which includes several other former CFTC and SEC alumni.”

Humenik’s arrival follows the addition of public policy and law partner Andrew Wright to the Washington, D.C., office earlier this month.

J. Barclay Collins, managing partner of K&L Gates’ Washington, D.C., office, commented: “We’re pleased to welcome Steve to our growing Washington office. His addition will strengthen our existing derivatives offerings to clients across our platform, which supports derivatives market participants trading in major financial centers.”

One of the largest and most experienced such practices in the United States and globally, K&L Gates’ investment management practice has more than 150 lawyers in offices in the United States, Europe, Australia, and Asia devoted to assisting the investment management and professional investor communities.

K&L Gates’ derivatives and structured products practice is a substantial part of the firm’s general investment management, public policy, energy, commodities, finance, and regulatory enforcement practices, and assists clients in the public and private distribution of structured finance securities in both cash and synthetic form, and in domestic and cross-border transactions.

K&L Gates is a fully integrated global law firm with lawyers located across five continents. The firm represents leading multinational corporations, growth and middle-market companies, capital markets participants and entrepreneurs in every major industry group as well as public sector entities, educational institutions, philanthropic organizations and individuals.
