K&L Gates Launches Trial Academy

25 September 2017
Pittsburgh - Global law firm K&L Gates LLP has created the K&L Gates Trial Academy to enhance client access to the firm’s impressive bench of experienced trial lawyers and to facilitate training of its next generation of trial lawyers.

“The establishment of the K&L Gates Trial Academy in the U.S. allows us to showcase and enhance our firm’s ability to represent clients in high-stakes litigation expected to go the distance – through verdict,” stated Thomas E. Birsic, a leader of K&L Gates’ global litigation and dispute resolution practice area and a partner in K&L Gates’ Pittsburgh office. “When a trial date looms, clients should know that K&L Gates has the experience and capabilities to take the case across the finish line, including when supplementing or replacing an existing litigation team is under consideration.”

Lawyers at K&L Gates have litigated complex cases and represented clients in arbitrations and evidentiary hearings before international tribunals in many different jurisdictions around the globe, but also have tried an enormous number of those cases to verdict or award. As a result, the firm has a wealth of experience and capabilities on issues relating specifically to trials, well beyond those generally associated with litigation, including, for example, discovery, motion practice, and arguments. Much of that valuable and increasingly rare trial experience belongs to approximately 60 accomplished trial lawyers across many practice groups and geographic locations, who, collectively, have tried hundreds of cases to verdict. These lawyers have handled significant high-stakes cases in a wide variety of industries, a diverse group of practice areas across the firm, and a broad geographic reach, including in the well-known “judicial hell holes.”

By forming the Trial Academy, K&L Gates has augmented its ability to bring seasoned advice to clients facing a trial or other evidentiary hearing, whether through long-term development of strategy as a matter develops or on short notice to assist on the eve of the event. By identifying lawyers with significant trial experience, the firm has made it easier for clients and colleagues to tap into this important resource as matters near trial. In addition to the collaboration fostered by this new initiative, the Trial Academy also will formalize the identification of critical trial resources (e.g., jury consultants, trial technology teams, e-discovery capabilities) and, through enhanced internal training programs, allow the more formal exchange of experiences and knowledge across the firm’s generations of lawyers.

K&L Gates’ litigation and dispute resolution lawyers span the globe and handle complex, multidimensional commercial and regulatory disputes, including international arbitrations, civil and criminal trials, deal litigation, domestic and international class actions, and appellate work. The practice’s lawyers have a successful track record in the various phases of litigation, including trial, and are recognized as being some of the foremost practitioners in their fields. The firm has a leading practice in the representation of corporate policyholders in the insurance coverage area and is a leading litigation firm for the financial services sector.

Reflecting the quality, depth, and breadth of its practice, K&L Gates recently was recognized for a second consecutive year among the “Awesome Opponents” in litigation in BTI Consulting Group’s Litigation Outlook 2018, also earning rankings as a “Standout” firm in all eight areas of litigation in which BTI annually rates firms. The firm also has consistently been ranked among both The Lawyer’s Global Litigation Top 50 and Global Arbitration Review’s Top 100 firms.

K&L Gates is a fully integrated global law firm with lawyers located across five continents. The firm represents leading multinational corporations, growth and middle-market companies, capital markets participants and entrepreneurs in every major industry group as well as public sector entities, educational institutions, philanthropic organizations and individuals.
