Date: 07 February 2017

As part of K&L Gates' Business Bytes video series, Lucy Shanahan, discusses how the increasing digitisation of the workforce will impact employers.

Transcript of Video
Businesses need to know that with the increasing digitisation of the workforce there are going to be significant changes to the way the workplace is structured and the way that work is performed.

One of the most significant changes is going to be the fact that 40% of the jobs that we do now are likely to be automated in the next 10 to 20 years. This will mean that some industries will contract as employers while other industries will increase their employment capacity.

So what do you need to do? Start thinking about the industry you are in and determine whether your industry is likely to contract or expand. If you're in an industry that is going to contract then identify the roles that you need and think about how you transition the roles you don’t need out of your business in a way that makes sense for the business. If your industry is one that will expand then you need to identify the skills and jobs you need in the future. Consider whether or not you have appropriate training and development in place to ensure that your employees have and continue to develop those skills.
