Careers
Hong Kong Trainee Solicitor
We welcome applications from law students and graduates who are interested in entrusting and developing a long-term legal career with us.
We offer a limited number of Hong Kong trainee solicitor contracts each year. We expect the candidates to have at least a predicted or achieved 2:1 (or equivalent) law degree or JD from leading universities. Offer of a training contract will be conditional upon the candidate successfully completing the Postgraduate Certificate in Laws course in Hong Kong before commencement.
Apart from strong academic background, we also expect the candidates to be self-motivated and in constant pursuit of excellence.
Successful candidates will receive training under four 6-month seat rotations. The first three seats will cover at least three of our core practice areas. We normally offer our trainees a choice of the area(s) they want to focus or re-focus on during the final seat according to their own preference.
Apart from the partner who acts as the trainee’s principal throughout the training period, we will also assign one or more supervising partners to each trainee under each seat. It is our aim that by the end of the training contract, our trainees would have worked with every partner in the office.
Our trainees will receive direct on-the-job feedback from principals, seat supervising partners and associates from time to time. We also have our firm-wide annual review process whereby our trainees will be evaluated and receive formal feedback to make sure they are on the right track in developing their legal abilities and professional skills.
We will be open for applications from 1 January until the end of February each year for the following year intake. Those interested are encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible during that period. We aim at issuing offers and completing the process by end of June.
Applications should be by email to HKTraineeRecruit@klgates.com attaching the following:
- Cover letter;
- Curriculum vitae;
- Academic transcripts/certificates (including university entrance examination results); and
- Reference letters/testimonies on work experience (if available).
