K&L Gates Advises on Redevelopment of Sydney Fish Market
Sydney – Global law firm K&L Gates is advising Sydney Fish Market on its major redevelopment, for which the New South Wales government recently announced that AUD750 million in funding has been secured.
The redevelopment will see the iconic tourist destination relocated to the head of Blackwattle Bay in Pyrmont and transformed into a world-class attraction that will feature sustainable design, increased retail floor space, an expanded food service offering, more seating and an improved overall visitor experience. The new site will also include additional public spaces such as an amphitheatre, waterfront promenade and recreational wharves.
The current Sydney Fish Market is already one of Sydney's most significant attractions, being visited by 20% of all international tourists to the city. The redeveloped Sydney Fish Market is expected to drive even further tourism to New South Wales, while also supporting additional jobs and boosting the seafood industry both within the state and across Australia.
The K&L Gates team advising Sydney Fish Market has been led by corporate partner Murray Landis, who has been supported by special counsel Nicholas Heinecke. Real estate partner Samuel Brown has also advised on the redevelopment with support from special counsel Tracey Jordan, while partners Matthew Cridland and Betsy-Ann Howe have provided advice on various tax matters.
"We are delighted to congratulate Sydney Fish Market on achieving this milestone," stated Landis. "Our firm has had the pleasure of working closely with Sydney Fish Market for the past 25 years, during which time we have advised on numerous redevelopment plans and the full spectrum of legal matters. Having developed a deep understanding of our client's business and industry, and having been intimately involved with every aspect of this current project, our K&L Gates team truly appreciates just how exciting it is for Sydney Fish Market to be starting this next chapter. The redevelopment will bring with it numerous benefits for our client and so many others, and we look forward to continuing our work with Sydney Fish Market as it develops."
Grahame Turk, Chairman of Sydney Fish Market, said: “Reaching this milestone is a major achievement and one which has been fraught with challenges. Having the counsel of Murray Landis and his team at K&L Gates has been invaluable in seeing us secure such a positive future for Sydney Fish Market.”
