Renewables

With lawyers across Australia, Asia, North and South America, Europe, and the Middle East, our renewable energy practice serves clients in virtually all renewable energy and clean technology sectors in developed and developing nations alike.

Our clients operate in solar, wind, biomass, hydropower, geothermal, and complementary sectors, including energy storage, distributed generation, electric vehicles, smart grid, transmission, and corporate renewable energy purchase and sale transactions. In addition, our global regulatory and public policy practices help clients overcome regulatory hurdles and influence legislative and policy developments in renewable energy.

We pride ourselves on our knowledge of the renewable energy market and its participants, as well as on our teamwork and responsiveness. We understand that no two clients are alike, and maintain a thorough grounding in both the business and legal dimensions of the renewable energy industry. Drawing upon a cohesive team of lawyers from multiple disciplines, and global experience in the renewable energy industry, we provide valuable, strategic legal advice to serve our clients’ business goals.

Our lawyers help renewable energy companies form and organize; advise clients in securing grants, venture capital, debt, tax equity, and other sources of financing; assist clients in establishing strategic alliances; and advise clients in mergers and acquisitions transactions.

We have advised on all aspects of renewable energy projects, from conception to completion and ongoing commercial operation, including:

  • Project Development and Feasibility
  • Siting and Permitting
  • Real Estate and Property Access
  • Project Financing, including Tax Equity Financing
  • Environmental Regulation and Protected Species
  • Mergers and Acquisitions
  • Tax
  • Power Purchase Agreements and Renewable Energy Credits
  • Interconnection and Transmission
  • Construction Contracts and Disputes
  • Regulatory and Government Policy
  • Related Legal Services

We have also prepared and negotiated numerous wholesale and retail electric power purchase agreements, as well as energy derivatives, electric transmission, interconnection, operation and maintenance, advanced billing, licensing, and other agreements. Our team has structured and negotiated “green-tariffs” to facilitate purchases of renewable energy, and we have negotiated transactions under these structures. We have experience with corporate and utility power purchase agreements throughout the United States, including California, the Pacific Northwest, the Southwest, CAISO, MISO, ISO-NE, ERCOT, and SPP. Our historical perspective and active participation in the market and at renewable energy conferences gives us insight into commercial and legal trends and allows us to be more efficient and effective in negotiating transactions with utility and non-utility buyers. Our U.S. based team also works regularly with our energy colleagues globally, providing insight into global energy trends, and allowing us to assist clients as they move across borders. We also have experience with the FTC Green-Guides, Dodd-Frank, FERC, accounting, and other issues unique to these corporate purchases that allow us to help companies structure agreements that are protective of their interests, are financeable, and also meet the sustainability goals and financial and other organizational needs of different types of energy customers.
