William M. Fortunato

Bill Fortunato is an associate with a background in electrical engineering. He is a member of the IP Procurement and Portfolio Management practice group based out of the firm’s Raleigh office. His practice includes strategically growing his clients’ intellectual property portfolios with an emphasis on patent drafting, prosecution, and licensing.

Bill’s clients operate in various fields, including artificial intelligence, wireless networking, virtual computing, electric power generation, optical chip manufacturing, industrial process control, medical device manufacturing, and artificial intelligence applications. Additionally, Bill’s clients range in size and IP experience from large Fortune 500 companies with developed IP procurement strategies, to start ups that are looking to take the first steps in establishing their IP portfolios.

Bill's practice has included the drafting and prosecution of domestic and corresponding foreign patent applications across a wide variety of technical fields for his clients. Bill has helped his clients obtain patents for medical devices, surgical implants, wind turbine components, electrical generator components, power conditioning circuits, industrial control software, nano-scale fabrication processes, speech recognition software, graphical user interfaces, home goods, sports equipment, aircraft/spacecraft components, wireless telecommunication control software, radiological sensors, antenna designs, and machine learning and other artificial intelligence systems that improve the accuracy, ease of use, and functionality of various computing devices. He has also led appeal procedures and conducted oral argument in front of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board to secure his client's patent rights, and has directed prosecution efforts during co-pending licensing discussions to ensure that his clients patent claims offer broad coverage over targeted third-party products and services.

Prior to practicing law, Bill was a process control engineer charged with streamlining and ensuring the quality of industrial electronic devices manufactured under his supervision. His current clients value his practical experience in handling the challenges associated with designing and implementing new products and improvements to existing products, both in hardware and software, and translating the manufacturing and business considerations into enforceable patents.
