Garrett Tobin is an associate in the firm's Intellectual Property practice. He focuses on patent preparation and prosecution, patent portfolio development, and strategic intellectual property counseling. Garrett works with clients ranging from emerging companies to established international businesses to protect innovations across a broad range of industries, with a particular emphasis on artificial intelligence and computer-implemented technologies.
A significant portion of Garrett's practice involves subject matter eligibility under 35 U.S.C. § 101. He has substantial experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications directed to software, artificial intelligence, financial technology, and other computer-related inventions, as well as innovations that incorporate software and artificial intelligence into broader technological environments such as vehicle systems, medical devices, industrial automation, and inspection technologies. Garrett regularly addresses eligibility issues through written advocacy and examiner interviews and closely follows developments in subject matter eligibility jurisprudence and USPTO guidance. He applies that knowledge when developing patent drafting, claiming, and prosecution strategies and works with inventors to identify and describe technological improvements with sufficient technical detail to support meaningful patent protection for computer-implemented innovations.
Garrett has significant experience developing and managing global patent portfolios involving complex prosecution and filing strategies across multiple jurisdictions. He prepares and prosecutes US patent applications and coordinates with foreign counsel to develop, maintain, and expand international patent portfolios. Garrett assists clients with invention harvesting, patentability assessments, portfolio development, filing strategy, and management of domestic and international patent families. He works closely with clients to align patent protection strategies with business objectives, competitive landscapes, product development plans, and evolving technologies.
