Decarbonization of Shipping: Post MEPC 76 Outlook and Beyond

KL Gates Hosted Event
Date: 29 July 2021

Decarbonization of shipping is set to be the most transformative and complex regulatory challenge the maritime industry has ever faced. The much anticipated 76th session of the IMO’s Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MPFC 76) was held in June. Among other actions, the MEPC adopted new technical and operational measures to reduce carbon intensity from shipping, which take effect in 2023. The measures include the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index, the Carbon Intensity Indicator rating scheme, and provisions for an enhanced Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan. These new ship efficiency regulations are intended to set the industry on a path to significantly reduce carbon intensity and greenhouse gas emissions from shipping over the next decade, and beyond.

During this webinar, we discussed the key outcomes of MEPC 76, and what it means for the maritime industry in the near and long term. We were thrilled to collaborate with representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, the American Bureau of Shipping, and the MSC Group.
