Joel N. Surendran

Joel Surendran is an associate in the firm's Finance practice. Joel advises on cross-border aviation finance and leasing transactions, as well as related commercial and contractual matters, with a particular focus on transactions involving Japan, the Asia-Pacific region, Europe and the Middle East.

Joel’s practice is anchored in aviation finance, where he advises lessors, airlines, financiers and investors on aircraft finance, leasing, purchase and novation transactions. Alongside his finance work, he advises on cross-border commercial, technology and sports-adjacent matters.

Joel originally trained and qualified in technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) and commercial law and continues to draw on this background when advising on commercial contracting, licensing, digital and data-driven issues arising in international transactions, especially in cross-border contexts.

Joel has practised in Tokyo, London and the Middle East, and has experience advising both domestic and international clients on complex cross-border matters. Prior to rejoining K&L Gates, he worked at one of the Big Four Japanese law firms, advising on international finance, TMT, licencing and commercial transactions involving Japanese and overseas counterparties.

Earlier in his career, he practised at a boutique law firm in London, focusing on commercial and technology-related matters. This multi-jurisdictional background gives Joel a strong understanding of international deal dynamics, client expectations and cross-border execution.
