David W. Old

David Old is a patent agent in the IP Procurement and Portfolio Management practice group. Before entering patent practice, David served as director of medicinal chemistry at a global pharmaceutical company developing novel medicines and medical devices. He later practiced as a patent agent at a mid-sized law firm, gaining experience across all aspects of patent preparation and prosecution. David's technical experience spans small molecules, proteins, nucleotides, medical devices, coatings, filters, and membranes. As both an inventor and former industry scientist, he brings a practical understanding of innovation and a firsthand appreciation of the challenges facing clients.

Prior to joining the firm, David worked as a patent agent at a mid-sized law firm, where he developed skills in all aspects of patent preparation and prosecution. Prior to becoming a patent agent, David served as the director of medicinal chemistry at a global pharmaceutical company specializing in novel medicines and medical devices. In his chemistry role, David gained expertise in conceiving, designing, synthesizing, evaluating, and optimizing novel chemical entities for applications in a variety of therapeutic areas. Prior to his industrial career, David was a postdoctoral research associate at Massachusetts Institute for Technology (MIT), where he discovered and developed highly active palladium catalyst systems for aryl halide amination and other cross-coupling reactions.
