3 January 2024

Houston – Global law firm K&L Gates welcomes John Northington Jr. to the firm’s Public Policy and Law practice as a government affairs advisor in the Houston and Washington, D.C., offices.

Northington has more than a decade of public and private sector energy policy and regulatory experience. Most recently, he served as senior director, federal affairs, with a boutique lobbying firm in Houston. Northington concentrates on federal regulatory and policy affairs both in the Executive and Legislative Branches with particular focus on energy issues within the Department of the Interior, Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, and House and Senate Committees with jurisdiction and oversight of energy and natural resources related activity. Northington previously served as advisor to the director of the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement at the US Department of the Interior. Having been involved in politics for more than 15 years, he has substantial experience with local, state, and federal political campaigns.

Karishma Page, a leader of K&L Gates’ Public Policy and Law practice, commented: “With a strong focus on energy, climate, and sustainability, John works across various federal agencies to drive large capital projects forward and find solutions to complex problems through the intersection of government, business, and politics. He is uniquely positioned to advocate on behalf of clients with intricate state legislative and regulatory issues in Texas and other states in the Southeast/West. We are delighted to have him join our team.”

Northington’s arrival follows the addition of several other new lawyers and policy professionals to the practice this year, including partner Jamie Jackson, former senior counsel to former US House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer; partner Matt Leggett, former minority chief counsel with the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee; government affairs advisor Finch Fulton, former US Department of Transportation deputy assistant secretary for transportation policy; government affairs advisor Ryan Carney, former chief of staff for two members of Congress; and of counsel Len Bickwit.

“John’s addition to the Houston office is a terrific example of our global platform,” said Anil Patel, managing partner of K&L Gates’ Houston office. “He will strengthen the already-strong collaboration between our Houston and DC offices. We welcome John to the Houston office and the firm.”

With a significant team of bipartisan lawyers and policy professionals who have more than 500 years of combined government experience, members of K&L Gates’ Public Policy and Law practice work with clients through the entire policy life cycle—from legislation to regulation and dispute resolution.
